We will be taking part in our first Marathon in November 2013, and we are raising funds for Greyhounds In Need, a charity we are closely involved with.  

Here you will find some background as to our motivations and the reasons why:

We moved to Murcia in Spain in 2006.  We immediately began to notice stray dogs, in particular greyhounds on the streets.  Abbey started volunteering at a local animal rescue charity, taking rescued dogs out on walks and learning more about the plight of the galgo (Spanish Greyhound).  She soon got a a job in the rescue centre and caring for the abandoned animals of Murcia became a way of life.

Karl worked at a golf course.  This seemed to be a favourite place for abandoning galgos as he often saw them on the golf course looking for food and shelter.  It was inevitable that one day one of these dogs (Dave) came home with us.

 

Dave was disturbingly thin and scared of everything.  It took him 4 days for him to even pluck up the courage to enter our house.  Right from the beginning though, we knew he had a heart of gold.  With time he learned to trust us and gradually became a confident, happy member of our family.

 

We moved back to England and of course Dave came with us.  He loved his walks and was happiest when he showed off his speed to other dogs and dog walkers by running rings around them (literally!) This amazing white dog received attention wherever he went.  People were drawn to him and he he seemed to make a positive impression on everyone we knew.

 

Dave came everywhere with us from holidays in France to climbing Mount Snowdon on Boxing Day.  He was always by the front door eager to start the next adventure.

 

Sadly Dave passed away recently, and we miss him dearly.  As we both enjoy running we have decided to run the New York Marathon in honour of him and to raise funds for Greyhounds in Need.

 

Greyhounds in Need provided us with a lot of support and advice in relation to the care that Dave needed, and really helped us (and Dave).

 

Greyhounds in Need work tirelessly to help the galgos in Spain.  They rescue and rehabilitate destitute galgos and also run education programmes in Spain to teach children the value of these amazing dogs and to encourage them to give them (and other animals) the respect and care they need and deserve.
