London Marathon 2022 · 2 October 2022 ·
Mum passed away to breast cancer when she was just 49 years old. She was a beautiful, kind and happy person - one of those people who are just put on this earth to be a mother and look after people! A favourite story I always refer to was when tamagotchi's got banned from mine and Al's school, she started taking them both to work with her - feeding and looking after them throughout the day because of how upset we would be if something happened to them if they were left unattended...!
Throughout her illness she always had hope - there would always be another treatment, something else in the locker that she could give a go to beat her illness. I remember she had a little book that she carried around where she wrote all her appointment notes, writing down anything she was feeling and scheduling what treatment was coming up next.
I told Mum I was going to do the London marathon for her to raise money for Macmillan in hospital just a couple of days before she passed away - which she found hilarious because at the time, I was incredibly unfit and could barely run up the stairs! Since then I have trained twice for the London marathon, both times going on to get injured with stress fractures just a couple of weeks before the race after four months training - which has been beyond frustrating - so I am going to be starting training early with lots of stretching this time to ensure I can finally do what I set out to do this October!
Why Macmillan? Because cancer is difficult enough without all of the other struggles that life can bring. Luckily Mum had a great support system in place, but a lot of people don't have that network to share their worries with and seek reassurance from. On top of that the stress of money, work and day to day life can be so overwhelming but if you’re diagnosed, your worries are Macmillan’s worries. Macmillan’s do whatever it takes to make the lives of those living with cancer easier.
