Story

Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer which is mainly attributed to asbestos - a condition many of us associate with heavy industry or one that’s been consigned to history. It is estimated that asbestos is found in 1.5 million buildings in the UK; 94% of hospitals and 80% of schools.  It is the leading cause of occupational death with nurses 3x and teachers 5x more likely to develop mesothelioma than the general population.

After my brother-in-law was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma this year, Mesothelioma UK have played a vital role, offering invaluable advice and support. They also directly fund specialist nurses to help provide support and care away from the sole specialist treatment centre for the whole of the UK, in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

As a charity they also campaign tirelessly to raise awareness, so if you cannot donate, please, please support the campaign Don’t Let The Dust Settle.

Based on recommendations made last year by the Work and Pensions Committee, Mesothelioma UK are asking the government for a central register so that they know where all the asbestos is and in what condition it is. They’re also asking them to set a timeframe for the safe removal of Asbestos, prioritising the high-risk settings such as schools and hospitals.

At 100,000 signatures it must be discussed in parliament.
