Story
Following our recent charity work in September 2012 in Nakuru, Kenya, We worked on two orphanage schools to provide support and better learning environment for the childrens in Nakuru. For most of these children this is the only place for food and most importantly ‘education’
We have decided continue our efforts in trying to make a difference for the lives of these children and the community who live is severe poverty.
Therefore we have partnered up with Start Small, a small UK non-profit charity who are dedicated in educating and building a brighter future for these children. We will be going to Kenya again in June 2013 and running a similar programme to the one we experience to try and make real changes to people’s lives.
We are also looking for more volunteers to join this programme with us for next year, please take a moment to read our plans.
KENYA CHALLENGE 2013
MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN NAKURU, KENYA
WHAT
‘The 2013 Challenge Building team’ will be doing the following work at Tumaini:
We will purchase the materials and build a shelter, basic tables and benches to protect the children from the elements during meal times. As you can imagine it gets baking hot during the summer (we have had children collapse due to the heat and dehydration) it then pours with rain during the rainy season (a lot of these children suffer with illness and chest problems so it’s vital we keep them dry and well).
At present the children sit outside on the ground in the sun or if it’s raining in the classrooms – where there simply is not enough space for them.
We will build a small planting area to grow greens to help feed the children; this little garden will be great for educating the children about the importance of self-sustainability.
‘The 2013 Challenge Teaching team’
If you’d rather not build, there will be the opportunity for you to teach at Tumaini. Initially you will shadow one of the teachers and as soon as you feel confident you will take the lessons yourself with guidance and help from one of the teachers.
Please note you do not need any teaching qualifications – the lessons will be based around basic Maths and English (these children are between 3 – 6 years old). You will also have the pleasure of keeping the children entertained during their breaks – singing, dancing, ball games or just a story and a cuddle! These children thrive on affection.
