Story

Why Access Bedford?

Well you know I love a charity challenge...so...here we are! I helped set up Access Bedford in 2014 to support the Deaf community by improving access to services and Deaf awareness, and reducing social isolation through community building and events.

Access Bedford is a small charity with no paid staff with everything it does being led by volunteers, with paid support from qualified interpreters where needed. I have always loved sign language, learning over the last few years to level 6 and believe that everyone should have fair and equal access to services which brings my two passions together through Access Bedford.

COVID-19 & Access Bedford

Fast track to COVID-19 and the need for good quality and accessible information in British Sign Language is even more important.  Access Bedford has changed the way it supports the Deaf Community to meet their needs at this very different time but this costs money for online subscriptions, new IT equipment, interpreters and more.

So I am going to attempt 26km on an exercise bike i have used twice (2 years ago) and try to raise enough to cover a couple of months of subscription costs to be able to offer online social sessions and online interpreter support.

What is the 2.6 challenge about?

General fundraising has been hit very hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of fundraising events have been cancelled and many charities, particularly smaller ones, are struggling to maintain services because of this huge reduction in income.

As the 26 mile London Marathon was due to take place on 26 April 2020, their team came up with the 2.6 Challenge to help mobilise fundraising for all the charities missing out on support at the moment. Please help if you can and thank you for all the support you have already given to the NHS and other charities locally and nationally.
