Story

My name is Al Brown, and many thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page raising funds for the vital work of Action for M.E.

I hope that you will support our efforts to raise money for Action for M.E. as my son Russell and I take part in this year's 100 mile Prudential Ride London 2019.  In preparation, and to meet my personal goal of 7,500 km this year I will also be taking past in the Loch Ness Etape with my colleagues from HKA, in April, the Skinny Tweed in June and the Tour o' the Borders.

For those of you that don't know me, I am chartered fire engineer with HKA , working as an expert witness, while  Russell will graduate in the summer from the School of Engineering at  University of Glasgow.

The charity Action for M.E.  delivers vital information, support and advice to those affected by M.E.   M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), often referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome, affects and estimated 250,000 individuals in the UK. For each one it can be a debilitating, life changing condition, and one that most people do not understand.

We first became aware of it when my wife and Russell’s mum became ill in 2005 and overnight went from being an active business woman training for a 5k, to being unable to walk upstairs.

Thankfully over a number of years she made a full recovery from her moderate M.E., but that required the support and encouragement of family, friends and her business partners. Taking time off work, then slowly returning to full-time work over several years and now having a fully active lifestyle.

Many are less fortunate suffering over many years from chronic pain, sleep disturbance and cognitive difficulties. Around 25% of those with M.E. are severely affected and are left house bound.

Russell and I  have friends and colleagues with family members that have had or continue to deal with the condition everyday, trying to old down jobs or study at University. I hope that you will support our efforts to raise money for Action for M.E. as Russell and I take part in the Prudential Ride London 2019.
