Story

Hi all,

Thanks for taking the time to visit my just giving page.

On Sunday the 8th of December I will be taking part in a white-collar boxing match hosted by ultra events, on behalf of Cancer Research UK.

I will undertake 8 weeks of intensive training before facing off against an opponent in the ring. I have little to no boxing training and will be using this experience to improve my physical health and self-confidence, all while raising money for a good cause.

Cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in humans, and it's highly likely in our lifetime we will know someone affected by the disease.

On average cancer has a survival rate of around 50%, while the survival rate has nearly doubled in the last 40 years, there is still a long way to go.

Here are a few facts and figures about cancer:

  • There are around 165,000 cancer deaths in the UK every year, that's around 450 every day (2015-2017).
  • Cancer accounts for more than a quarter (28%) of all deaths in the UK (2017).
  • In females in the UK, there were around 77,700 cancer deaths in 2017.
  • In males in the UK, there were around 88,900 cancer deaths in 2017.
  • Every four minutes someone in the UK dies from cancer.
  • Lung, bowel, breast and prostate cancers together accounted for almost half (45%) of all cancer deaths in the UK in 2017.
  • Around a fifth of all cancer deaths are from lung cancer.
  • Each year more than half (53%) of all cancer deaths in the UK are in people aged 75 and over (2014-2016).
  • Mortality rates for all cancers combined in the UK are highest in people aged 90+ (2014-2016).
Cancer Research UK is devoted to finding a cure for cancer, and we can only hope that a cure is found within our lifetime, but the charity relies solely on donations from the public to be able to continue operating.

If you could spare a few £'s to support this great cause I would be extremely grateful.

Kind Regards,

Adam
