Story

My youngest son George was diagnosed with Becker Muscular Dystrophy in 2017. BMD is a rare and progressive muscle wasting condition that has no cure. The severity and timeline of the condition
varies, but unfortunately the headline symptoms are a decline in mobility typically requiring wheelchair use and reduced life expectancy due to heart and lung function. Whilst George has had to give up activities he enjoyed like football, swimming, rugby and uses his wheelchair often on a daily basis when his muscles get tired, as a 7 year old he does have time on his side and who knows what medical breakthroughs there will be as he gets older - especially if more research can be funded!

With that purpose, on Sunday 9th June I am takingon the 2019 Dragon Devil cycling event held in South Wales. This is a 298km/185 mile one-day bike ride with around 4500m of ascent thrown in for good measure. As the rider guide describes, this is “Arguably the toughest one-day ride in the UK, the Devil distance is as tough as it gets and riders need to be prepared for a long day in the saddle”. This long day will likely be well over 14 hours for me from start to finish, so fingers crossed for decent weather at least! Unsurprisingly I have never cycled this far before and there are cut off times at various parts of the route that need to be met, so I am unsure whether I will be able to complete it, but knowing that a bit of pain on one day for me is nothing compared to what George and others go through day to day will hopefully get me through!

Thank you for your sponsorship!
