Great North Run 2022 · 11 September 2022 ·

We are a friendly team of staff and volunteers working with the Trussell Trust to help alleviate food inequality in Hartlepool. The rising cost of living is an increasing worry for many. Our aim is to help relieve short term worry by providing food for 3 days and helping address wider issues.

Story

This year I've been doing a bit of running and thought I'd set myself a challenge to run (slowly jog) the Great North Run and raise some money in the process.

I've chosen Hartlepool Foodbank to give something back to my hometown, especially in light of the current cost of living crisis and recent report around child poverty being the highest in the North East.

We shouldn't need foodbanks but unfortunately, we do and they need support.

---

No one should be faced with the indignity of needing emergency food. Yet food banks in the Trussell Trust's network gave out 936,000 emergency food parcels between 1 April and 30 September. More than 356,000 of them went to children.

Need for emergency food has been increasing year-on-year and the latest figures from the Foodbank Network highlight an alarming 128% rise compared to this time five years ago.

During 2021 Hartlepool foodbank provided the following:

• 118,742 meals

• 1976 vouchers processed

• 3752 people, of which 1178 were children, supported with food parcels.

Together, we can end the need for food banks in the UK. Together, we can create a more just society.

Please be generous and wish me luck. I'll need it.
