Story

Over the month of November, I'll be running 60km for Move For Movember. Generally, Movember is about raising money for charities and causes dedicated to men - I chose Tiny Changes for a couple of reasons...

I believe Scott encouraged men to talk about their mental health through his lyrics, his music. I still think, even after his passing, his words encourage people to come forward. I also like the fact that Tiny Changes looks towards helping the youth. Mental health affects everybody - all over the world, every 40 seconds, someone commits suicide. In the UK, the rate of deaths by suicide in those 25 and under absolutely towers over death by, say, knife crime for all age groups...but we don't talk about it. How can we encourage young people to be better, get better, if we shy away from even talking about it? By focusing on the youth, Tiny Changes gives young people an opportunity to get better, find hope, and that will better equip them to pass that on to the future generations creating a better, brighter future.

On a personal level, Scott's words have spoken to me like very few others. I've faced my own battles with anxiety, low mood and so on...and the lyrics just hit home. But what I always love is that so many of the lyrics push about the hope. 'Floating In The Forth' ends with the lyric "I think I'll save suicide for another year" and while it does feel bleak, the takeaway is the relief of the person got so close but then chose life. Another song that I think sums up Scott's lyrics perfectly is the Frightened Rabbit song 'Oil Slick':

"There is light but there's a tunnel to crawl through, there is love but its misery loves you, we still have hope so I think we'll be fine, in these disastrous times, disastrous times."

We all have to keep an eye on that light because it's never really too far away. People can get through the rough times.

If anybody can donate anything at all, please do - it's much appreciated. My knees are not what they were...I will find this difficult...so appreciate every single bit of support.

Thank you...and below are some more words about the charity.

"While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to Earth."

Scott Hutchison, singer in the band Frightened Rabbit, died by suicide in May 2018. Since then, his family have been campaigning to improve mental health amongst children and young people in Scotland.Tiny Changes (SC049112) aims to further that cause by funding projects and events that support affected people and advance research, and also by raising awareness and influencing policy. There is a crisis in young people's mental health in Scotland and it is getting worse. The next generation needs your help now.
