Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
During this year i will be summiting the UK's highest mountain peaks, and then in February 2014 I will be attempting to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa in memory of our son Oliver David Whitlock who was stillborn at 39 weeks.
I will be raising money for the SANDS charity who offer support to anyone affected by the death of a baby and the promote research to reduce the loss of babies' lives.
The death of a baby is a devastating experience. The effects of grief can be overwhelming and parents, their families and friends can be left feeling dazed, disorientated, isolated and exhausted.
Sands is a national charity, established by bereaved parents in 1981.
Their 3 core aims are to: Support anyone affected by the death of a baby; To work in partnership with health professionals to improve the quality of care and services offered to bereaved families; and to promote research and changes in practice that could help to reduce the loss of babies' lives
Without the generous support of people like you who selflessly donate to charities such as SANDS, this service of support & research would cease to exist.
A little about my challenge:
During 2013, I will be taking on the UK's three highest & hardest mountains Scafell Pike, Snowdon & Ben Nevis and then in Feb 2014, I will be flying out to Tanzania, Africa for 11 days to attempt to summit the world's largest single standing mountain - Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit is 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level, and will take a full 7 days to summit using the Lemosho Route.
There are four very different climatic zones on Kilimanjaro, the route starts in lush rainforest with a variety of wildlife, rising to 2800m where heather & moorland take over, followed by an Alpine desert at 4000-5000m. After this the summit zone (or Arctic Zone) arrives with temepratures as low as -30oC prevail. It is here that the ice cap is present with glaciers dating back 11,700 years and measuring 400sq kilometres.
This is completely out of my comfort zone, and will challenge me both physically & mentally, pushing me the the edge of my limits.
To maximise the money raised, I have funded the whole trip myself, which means 100% of money donated will go direct to SANDS, meaning they can directly benefit from your donations.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
