The Cornwall Leukaemia Trust supports the working of the Department of Haematology at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, Truro, nearly 600 adults are newly seen each year with a variety of possible blood disorders. The Department is established to provide care for patients with blood disorders and is also a designated haemophilia treatment centre, providing a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic care. Where appropriate, for example allogenic transplantation, the Department to works together with others eg Plymouth or Bristol, to which patients and their families may need to travel for treatments. Research to improve care is an intrinsic part of NHS practice and is actively undertaken by the Haematology Department, primarily as collaborative work with other UK and international centres. Many studies are approved and administered by the UK National Institute for Health Improvement (NHRI) and other studies by commercial research organisations.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi my names Adam and I was diagnosed with AML on 24th may2021.

After being poorly with a headache that wouldn't go for a week I finally went to hospital to get checked out.

After blood tests it came back I had AML , which stands for acute myeloid leukemia. I was told I had 2 months to live if I didn't start treatment.

It's a blood cancer where it attacks the white cells in the bone marrow.

I was admitted to hospital and stayed for around 6 days with no visitors.

I was sent home for a few days to see my family before coming back to start chemo.

This didn't happen as as while at home we had to phone an ambulance because I couldnt breath and having massive chest pains.

Once in hospital I was put on lowen ward which is for cancer patients.

Things got worse over the next 3 days, I didn't sleep i hardly ate but my breathing was getting worse and I needed more oxygen.

Fran (my wife)was called to come see me as I was being taken to ICU (intensive care unit).

Once there I was put on a high flow oxygen mask which helped alot but my condition was still really bad. I had pneumonia.

I was in so much pain I asked to be put to sleep just so I could rest I was that tired.

I was put into an induced coma. While asleep fran had to give concent for me to be put on a ventilator as I wasn't getting better.

While asleep I went somewhere different , I was in a completely white room and on a silver metal table. I was surrounded by 7 beings (Aliens ) they communicated by a clicking sound. I wasn't scared I felt comfortable and safe. I knew they were helping. All of a sudden one spoke English and said , right he's ready let him go. The next thing I knew I was waking up.

The doctors said it was touch and go , if I didn't go on the ventilator I could die and going on the ventilator I could die as its alot of pressure for my lungs and body.

I was asleep for 7 days , any longer and I could of had brain damage. I also lost 13kg of muscle while asleep. All the muscle I had from weight training most certainly helped keep me alive.

My body just wasn't managing , my heart was only pumping at 10% and my oxygen levels were at 15%. Deaths door basically.

Fran was called and told to bring my kids to hospital to say bye to me as they didn't think I was going to make it through the next night. What an awful event for them to go through.

Being the stubborn tough old boot I am , I pulled through and they started the process of waking me up the next day.

Fran came to see me that day, I don't really remember as I was still very high from all the drugs. One thing I do remember saying is I told fran to kill me now as I didn't want to live like this. she shouted at me to stop being so daft.

The few days we're awful. I couldn't sleep , I had a feeding tube , a catheter fitted, I had tubes coming from my left and right legs, I had one that was attached to my neck with six attachments all pumping different drugs into me.

I couldn't move or walk I could barley move my arms, I constantly soiled the bed as I could get to the toilet or use a bedpan.

After about 5 days I was well enough to be moved back down to Lowen ward.

We could finally start the chemotherapy. I was put on FLAG which is 4 drugs into one , one of the most aggressive chemos for my condition. I had chemo everyday for 7 days.

This made me really poorly. Couldn't eat , drink , move my body. I was sick almost everyday. The nurses were amazing at looking after me.

I started to get better and even had a pizza hut pizza brought in by fran one day.

Being a unique person I am things got worse again , I got another infection and was having high temperatures.

I was taken back to intensive care until where I stayed here again for the next 7 days.

After another grueling week of touch and go moments , countless amounts of drugs i recoved once again and taken back to lowen.

I only recoved this time as I was given special white blood cells. These had to be taken from 10 different people in the same day and brought to the hospital. My body wasn't recoverng by itself and needed help. Without these white cells I was going to die.

I was on lowen for about another week before I recovered so well and quick I was aloud home after being in hospital 9 weeks.

It was an amazing feeling seeing the wife and kids properly again.

I was home for 2 weeks before going back to hospital for my second round of chemo.

I was there for the next 5 weeks only seeing the wife.

The same happened again. Infections and temperatures but the fantastic doctors did an amazing job at keeping me from going back to intensive care.

The next 5 weeks were horrible. Back to square one. Being sick , to being able to move. I had bottles by my bedside to pee in as I couldn't get to the toilet quick enough.

Fran came every single day to see me , some days for an hour and some a little longer.

I made some good process in the last week and I finally got the news I could go home again.

Iv been home now 3 months

Everyday is a challenge , one day I feel good and go for a walk or ill just stay in bed all day.

My wife has been an absalute angel through all this. She has seen me at my worst , on a bed nearly dead. But she has stuck by me without hesitation.

I couldn't of done this without her love and support.
