Story
2009 Flora London Marathon
I made it !! After 26.2 painful miles I finally crossed the finish line in 4 hours 46 minutes. A bit slower than I hoped for, largely due to the warm weather and a severe problem with cramp in both legs at 22 miles. Knowing Joe was in the Mall, ready to cheer me home, gave me the strength to limp and jog my way through the last 4 miles. A huge thank you to everybody who sponsored me. Your combined effort will make a huge difference to JDRF's ability to fund research and ultimately find a cure for children like Joe.
My reason for running
As you may already be aware my son, Joe, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year shortly after his 4th birthday.
Most people have heard of diabetes and many assume it is simply a condition that prevents those affected eating sweets and chocolate. The reality is very different. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, life threatening condition that has a lifelong impact on those diagnosed and their families. Joe and children like him rely on multiple insulin injections everyday just to stay alive.
As a parent I live in hope that medical science will deliver a breakthrough, however significant further research is required and this needs funding. That's why I'm running the London Marathon to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented and this is the ony charity dedicated to funding research and finding a cure.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. Please do donate what you can and thank you, on behalf of both myself and Joe, for your support.
