On the 5th June 2022, we sadly lost our beloved Mum to colorectal cancer – just 2 months from diagnosis. She had no symptoms prior to this and presented as a fit and active individual. Colorectal cancer is one of the more common forms of cancer in South Asian men and women. Despite the rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) in South Asians, the CRC screening rates remain low in South Asians and Muslims compared with those in Whites and other ethnic minorities. Please make sure that you take cancer screenings seriously and help to raise awareness within your own families, communities and networks as early identification can save lives. She has left an unfillable void in our lives which is difficult to comprehend. 

As with everything in her life, she continued to teach us so much right to the end - through her suffering and ultimate passing. Mum’s bravery and inner strength in the face of something so terrifying was nothing short of heroic. Her ability to remain calm in the face of such adversity and to rise above it with positivity and determination. Above all, it was her unwavering faith that kept her selfless and strong. It is in her honour and memory that we would like to build a Masjid (mosque). 

The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), said: "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for Sadaqah Jariyah.Whoever builds a Masjid for the sake of Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” A masjid is at the heart of any local Muslim community. It provides a place for its worshippers to pray and contemplate as well as being a hub for educational programmes and other everyday services. The role of the masjid is to help people learn more about Islam and to nurture their moral and spiritual development.
