SimplyHealth Great North Run 2018 · 9 September 2018 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am running the Great North Run on the 9th September for Diabetes U.K in order to raise as much as I can in order for their fantastic research to continue and develop. Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong and incurable condition and every 2 minutes someone is diagnosed with diabetes in the U.K. Diabetes U.K is the largest charity in research into the condition, and has invested up to 60 million pounds in the last ten years to this. However this research cannot be carried out without the
generous donations and support of members.
In 2016 my family became aware of how much diabetes can affect someone’s life, and turn which were once care free tasks into hours of planning. My younger brother was diagnosed in 2016 with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 15 which was a real shock to my family. Not only did he have to adapt every aspect of his life but so too did my family in order to help support him and minimise the impact this condition was going to have on his life. At the age of 15 you don’t expect to have to think about everything you eat or the activities you do and the impact it could have on your blood sugar levels, but now unfortunately he has to. Each day he now has to weight his foods, count the amount of carbohydrates and plan every meal he has in order for it to correspond with the amount of insulin he has to inject to counteract his blood sugar levels. This was an abundance of information to take on straight from the diagnosis.
However, Diabetes U.K has been an excellent research tool in order to help my family to understand the cause of diabetes and ways of managing it. Support forums, events, an online community and a helpline are just a few of the things that the website has to offer in order to support those with the condition and their families. For anyone needing more information or support please visit the website diabetes.org.uk as it does provide a vast range of information
answering any questions you may have at all about diabetes.
Diabetes should not been seen as a barrier to anyone’s life, so please help me raise awareness and support Diabetes U.K so they can continue the fantastic work they do by donating on my page. Every donation is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
