Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

Due to Covid the Parkinson's UK Great Glen challenge in Scotland was cancelled back in May. However is taking place virtually on 26th Sept carrying out a walk of our choice.

Along with my sister I will be walking from Horsham to Shoreham by Sea in support of Parkinsons UK. Our lovely Dad has been diagnosed with Parkinson's for 8 years so it is a charity very close to our hearts. Dad is a very magical man and we want to do everything we can to raise funds towards finding a cure for and supporting families like ours.

The walk will start in Horsham, across to Southwater and down the Downs Link all the way to the sea where we're also going to finish it with a swim.

We not only wish to raise funds but also raise awareness of some of the symptoms of Parkinson's people may not be aware of so there's more of an understanding of the disease, especially 'Freezing'. Freezing can be caused by meds wearing off, stress, anxiety, doorways, changes of environment, change of flooring or crowds. When a freezing episode occurs it has been described as though your feet feet are suddenly glued to the ground and you are unable to move. These episodes can lead to falls once movement kicks in again.

Due to Covid regulations lots of environments have changed ie. tall boards between supermarket checkouts, this can be a trigger for a freezing episode. Can you imagine having a queue of people waiting behind you and being frozen to the spot and unable to move? This is where more of an understanding of the disease would be useful to take the stress away from Parkinson's sufferers. Keep calm, give space and ask, 'Can I help you?'

We hope to raise £3000 for Parkinson's UK so i'd be very grateful for any donations no matter how big or small. You'll be helping to find a cure and to improve the quality of life for everyone affected by Parkinson's.

Thank you!

Aimee and Lisa
