SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA

Story

I can't believe I'm about to embark on a 20hr row across the Irish Sea through the night having never properly rowed before in my life! The practice row I did the other day (see picture of us about to hit the calm waters of the Thames) was an alarming experience - rowing is definitely not as easy as I thought and I have realised I am extremely under prepared!

I'm really up for the challenge though and I know that it is for an amazing charity which is making huge advances with it's research (SMA is currently an untreatable condition). The input from Andrew and the rest of Cos's family is also incredible.

Ben is a real dude but I cant imagine what he or his family goes through. A few years ago we used to play football together but for him that pleasure has been long taken away - not that I have ever once seen him complain. The 20 hour row is nothing in comparison and the Athens marathon, which Ben is about to do in his wheelchair, is just an example of his incredible character and the inspiration he constantly gives me!

Thank you for any donations however small.

Ainsley

P.S I will be sending you all lots of pictures of us in action on the row and walk! We have also been told it is very important to wear proper rowing gear - check out the second picture for my potential outfit. So not me!
