Story

On Sunday 6th December I’ll be doing a 20km run to raise funds for the  Colombian Caravana, as part of #GivingTuesday, a global movement that aims to mobilise support and funds for charitable causes as a counter to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

I’ve recently become a Trustee of this fantastic organisation, which supports Colombian lawyers and human rights defenders at risk. The Caravana, like many small charities, has been hit really hard by the COVID-19 crisis, as fundraising events have been cancelled and donations have dwindled.

At the same time, the pandemic is posing new and more challenging threats to justice and the safety and security of human rights lawyers in Colombia. They are unable to deploy the usual protection strategies – varying their routes to work, keeping their office and home environment separate – that help keep them safe. The Caravana has had to postpone our flagship activity – a delegation of international lawyers to Colombia to witness the situation on the ground – which promotes solidarity and raises awareness of the issues faced by Colombian lawyers and human rights defenders.

We’ve adapted our work but need your support now to continue
to provide online/remote support over the coming months. This includes:

  • Hosting virtual check-ins with lawyers at risk so we can act quickly on threats and make it clear the international community is still watching
  • Responding quickly with urgent advocacy an legal interventions on cases that are crucial to achieving justice
  • Providing a platform for Colombian lawyers at risk to share their stories in their own words and advocate for better protection
  • Holding virtual events connecting Colombian lawyers with key audiences to raise awareness of their situation and the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on justice in Colombia

Anyone who knows me will know that I’m not a natural runner(!), and 20km is double my usual running distance, so this will be a real challenge for me! Any donation, no matter how small, will be very gratefully received. Thank you!
