NDCS Skydive - Deaf Awareness Week · 8 May 2010

We are the National Deaf Children’s Society, the leading charity for deaf children. We give expert support on childhood deafness, raise awareness and campaign for deaf children’s rights, so they have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Story

So... I have finally committed to do a Skydive for the National Deaf Children's Society!!!

I don't know why, considering every image and video I have seen of people doing Skydives has made me physically ill :(

Those who know me know that I am regularly on a plane... about time I jumped out of one!

You may also know that I get a little anxious when I don't have control of situations... not sure how much control I will have of anything at 10,000 feet in the air!?! So am dreading doing this, but knowing that it's for a really good cause will spur me on to jump out of that plane... and freefall at 120mph...

Until I began working for NDCS, I never thought about how deafness can actually effect someone's day to day life like not being able to wake up to a regular alarm clock, being able to listen to an iPod whilst commuting or go to numerous theatre productions...

People aren't always born deaf, childhood illnesses as well as head injuries can take away someone's hearing. I have had the privilege to meet and work with some really inspirational deaf children, young people and adults who received a lot of support from NDCS.

So please do sponsor me to do this challenge... I can guarantee that your money will be used to make such a huge difference to deaf children and their families. Majority of parents who's new born is diagnosed as being deaf then receive little or no support from the hospital or government; this is when NDCS steps in and supports deaf children and their family from birth until independence. Not only does NDCS support deaf children in the UK, but also children in South Asia, East Africa and Latin America.

Why do deaf children need NDCS?

A deaf child in the UK:

- is likely to be born to hearing parents with no knowledge or family history of deafness

- leaves school with an average reading age of 9

- has a 40% chance of developing mental health issues

- is three times more likely to suffer from bullying, physical, emotional or sexual abuse

By donating to NDCS you can help us support these children, their families and professionals who work with them.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.
