Story
Hello friends,
Thank you for giving in and visiting this page!
In April this year I will be cycling across the USA to raise money and awareness for the charity Prison Fellowship.
Currently in the UK 46% of adult prisoners and 69% of children are reconvicted within one year of release.
That is correct... read it again- 46%!!
Furthermore only 52% of prisoners on release say they believe they had done something in prison that would make them less likely to reoffend. Imagine hiring someone to do a job with a roughly 1 in 2 chance of them completing it!
Why give to prison fellowship?
I know it works. Having helped run Sycamore Tree courses in Wandsworth and Feltham prisons the difference in the motivation of individuals to go on and make changes to lifestyle, repair family relationships and gain education/work is huge. The video about Simon below gives an indication of the transformation that some guys/ girls/ children go through on the course.
THE IMPACT OF GIVING TO BETTER THOSE IN PRISON IS MASSIVE.
Prison is a great opportunity to give people the opportunity to change that they may have never had before.
You might say there are many more deserved recipients of your charity than prisoners. However I would challenge that thinking on 2 levels:
a) Having a look at the image below: those locked up may be less representative of the UK population than first thought (abuse/neglect/addiction)
b) If we don't help those in prison they will go on to reoffend and there will be more victims of crime.
What does prison fellowship do about this?
Prison fellowship runs 3 programmes:
•Sycamore tree- A course run in 40 UK prisons with 2,000 volunteers that teaches those in prison about the impact their crime has on people.
•Angel tree- Give gifts to the children of those in prison at Christmas and Mother's Day gifts.
•Letter writing- Matches prisoners with members of the public to exchange letters and maintains relations with prison staff in order to be able to do this
If you have read this far, thank you! If you would like to ask any questions about how any donations would be used or any other questions please feel free to email me at andrewjordon@hotmail.com or visit the prison fellowship or the charity commission's website.
Even if you can only give a very small amount it will show your support to change possibly one of the biggest failures of our age.
Oh and the physical challenge... I will be cycling across the USA with a group of cyclists, 3,600 miles from California to New Hampshire (that's 60% longer than the Tour de France- better get a padded saddle!!).
Thank you.
Andrew.
