Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am a 62 year old Consultant Cardiologist and Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise cardiology at the University of Bristol. I am also a grandfather of 4 lovely little children. Our world is experiencing a climate emergency. The ice caps are melting at an unprecedented rate, the weather is increasingly unpredictable with wild fires, droughts and even the potential for the Gulf steam to be disrupted which will irreversibly change the UK climate. However, the consequences of climate change are going to be much more serious for people living in the developing world. In 2018, in a report to the Human Rights Council, Philip Alston, UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, described climate change as “an unconscionable assault on the poor” resulting in floods, heatwaves, forest fires, starvation, failure of crops and water shortages.
In December 2021 I will be rowing across the Atlantic - 3000 nautical miles from the Canary islands to Antigua. All the money I raise from sponsorship will be used by TEAR Fund to help vulnerable communities around the world adapt to the climate crisis and lift themselves out of poverty. I will be in Rannoch Adventures beautiful RX80- open rowing boat. Known as Roxy, she can take a total of 12 rowers in the crew. This will be a hard physical challenge- likely to take between 35-45 days- but not nearly as hard as living in a flooded island or barren desert due to the effects of climate change.
Tearfund is a Christian charity that partners with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries to tackle poverty through sustainable development, responding to disasters, and challenging
injustice. Tearfund is focussed on reducing the consequences of climate change by supporting its partners in the developing world with practical schemes designed to offset as much of the climate change damage as possible.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity. All the money raised will go towards the Tearfund climate change project.
Please do support me if you are able! Details of the row will be given on our Roxy blog and you will be able to follow progress on the links (to be added) below.
