Story

Thanks for visiting my page. I'm raising money for the British Heart Foundation and I'd be so grateful for your support.

Following an incident in January 2020 while on a night walk in Kent, and the subsequent advice of my doctor, I attended A&E and was diagnosed with Severe Aortic Stenosis and Coronary Artery Disease. I had open heart surgery in August 2020 for Aortic Valve replacement and a Coronary Artery Bypass.

I am extremely grateful for the wonderful skill and care of the Cardiac team at King's College Hospital in the midst of a Pandemic. I have also benefitted in my recovery from the research carried out over many years by the British Heart Foundation.

Over the weekend 29th to 31st May 2021 I will be attempting a continuous walk of 100 miles to be completed within 48 hours. I will be following the rules and the route of the 2018 LDWA 'Cinque Ports 100.

Starting in Hastings at 9am on Saturday 29th May and finishing by 9am on Monday 31st May, the route follows coast and countryside, visiting the Cinque Ports (Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich), plus the Cinque Port Ancient Towns of Winchelsea and Rye, and the Cinque Port Limbs of Tenterden, Lydd, Folkestone and Deal.  At Sandwich the route then turns back to Dover. (Route and checkpoint details here https://ldwa.org.uk/2018Hundred/W/5270/checkpoints-and-maps-main-event.html

Track me live during my walk at  https://track.trail.live/event/alan-stewart-ldwa

I will be attempting to pass through the designated checkpoints within time, and finish within 48 hours - although the checkpoints will not be manned as in the 2018 event, and I will be unsupported. I will be carrying as much food and water as I can and relying on resupplying along the way.

The BHF has helped to halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK, but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. A donation of £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps - so please give what you can to help me hit my target, and wish me luck! Thanks.
