Story
Motor neurone disease (MND) describes a group of conditions that affect the nerves (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord that tell your muscles what to do. With MND, messages from these nerves gradually stop reaching the muscles, leading them to weaken, stiffen and waste.
In 2011, Caroline Millar being diagnosed with MND, a group of ‘Caswell Friends’ decided to organise a charity event to raise funds for a research project.
Being predominantly more of a cyclist in 2012 than runner, a cycle challenge seemed the most appropriate. The 24 hour static cycle challenge was aimed at bringing ‘the message to the street’ and public awareness of MND.
The event took place in September 2012 in Buckingham town centre pedestrian precinct and proved a great success, appearing in the local news three times, before during and after the event.
As Caroline and I had run the Great South Run back in 2001, it was also thought appropriate to back up the cycle challenge with sponsorship of my running the Great South again that same year.
The two events realised nearly £2k for MND research, a project that we had identified with the help of the director of MND research, Brian Dickie.

Five years on, although Caroline is no longer with us, it makes a great double to raise funds again using the Great North Run this time as the vehicle.
We hope that we can count on your support in this venture !
