Alan, who died unexpectedly in April, was formerly Chair of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. In his memory, EFDSS have named their Creative Bursary and Residency Programme after him. Each bursary is worth up to £2000 and is available to artists at any stage of their career.
Alan fostered many innovative cross-art form and cross-genre collaborations and we are very grateful to EFDSS for naming this bursary after him and for the opportunity to ensure his legacy continues.
Any donations to this fund, and previous donations to the GoFundMe page, will go directly towards the Alan James Creative Bursaries. Until the end of August, the Arts Council will be matching any donations made.
For those who did not know Alan, he was a maverick, with eclectic musical tastes, who devoted his life to promoting and programming contemporary music and art. He was a supporter of many innovative and non-mainstream musical acts and art projects throughout the years. The British music scene is far richer as a result of his wide-ranging but discerning interest, enthusiasm and influence. Although he was not a household name, he was highly respected by those who knew him professionally and was dearly loved by his friends, for his kindness, generosity and sensitivity and for his sharp intellect, eccentricity and irreverent sense of humour. For more about Alan's life and achievements read his obituary in The Guardian and an article in Froots magazine.
