Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. You never know what's round the corner and this opportunity to sail the Atlantic just materialised out of the fog.
Madness took over and to cut a long story short we head down to the Canaries with friends in early December, to board the S.V. Jon a 40' yacht. Having practiced a few circuit and bumps (to mix metaphors) we set off on the first leg. This is down towards Cape Verde, a short one thousand eight hundred kilometres away (or nearly a thousand nautical miles)!
Then, hopefully having fully replenished in Cape Verde, across to Carriacou, about 4198 kms 2200 nautical miles away. Cape Verde has now been abandoned and we'll swing close to but not touch down.
The journey to Cape Verde can take 7/8 days, a few days for viewing the islands and recuperation before the main leg which can take 16 plus days.
It is hoped that we will touch dry land before Christmas but that may just be wishful thinking! New Year is probably more likely. Our programme will now extend into the New Year with Christmas and the New Year on the high seas.
My main motivations for taking part in this challenging experience is to fulfil a life long ambition. As well as this, I wish to really hone my sailing skills and to experience ocean sailing and the challenges associated with ocean sailing.
Our charity is the RNLI, we had the benefit of being schooled in Devon and Cornwall and nothing more symbolises their work then the story of the Solomon Browne.
