In memory of John Albon

Motor Neurone Disease moves fast. It takes away time, it takes away independence and it has no cure. Every day we support people affected by MND. We fund ground-breaking research. We campaign for better care. We’re here for everyone who needs us. Because with MND, every day matters.

Story

All proceeds will go to MND Association West Sussex South branch.

As a family, we are trying to raise as much money as possible for the MND Association. Please read our story below:

John Albon, Barbara’s husband, Chris and Cathy’s Dad, Olivia, Frankie, Grace, and Will’s Grandad was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease on the 18th July 2018 at the age of 71. John sadly passed away on the 19th September 2020 in St Barnabas House Hospice surrounded by his family. My Grandad was an incredibly special, brave and stoic man who is dearly missed by us all.

He was Brighton born and bred and completed most of his police career at Sussex Police in Brighton during the 70s, 80s and 90s. He finished his career in Brighton as the Police Chief Superintendent and then was promoted to Assistant Chief Constable for Devon and Cornwall. He was a keen runner himself and John and Mum (Cathy) ran their first ever marathon in 2003, crossing the finish line together, holding hands.

Me (Olivia) and my partner Chad are running the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on 12th May 2024. We are so excited to be running this marathon together, we can't wait to cross the finish line. It is my second marathon and Chad's first official marathon.

We are also so proud of Nanny who was the Lady Captain of Worthing Golf Club 2023/24. The MND Association WSS Branch was her charity of choice and she raised £8,601 through various fundraisers in her year of captaincy.

Our Sussex MND Association Charity Ball was held on Friday 1st September 2023, at Worthing Golf Club. The evening was an enormous triumph and raised around £11,000!

There was lots going on throughout the evening, Frankie hosted the evening; there was a wonderful magician, Martin Sanderson, who shocked many people with his incredible magic tricks; Andrew Mardell was their excellent photographer who took some beautiful photos of the guests and the gorgeous venue at Worthing Golf Club; an auction (hosted by Chris and a friend) and raffle with so many items donated by various people/companies/sportspeople; a speech about the MNDA Charity and the role of an AV by Mum; a DJ and our LIVE Ice Bucket Challenge.

Me and Mum ran the Brighton Marathon on the Sunday 14th April 2019 and everyone helped us raise over £5,000 and Grandad managed to join us at the finishing line, so we could cross together, holding hands again!A Charity Golf Day was also held at Worthing Golf Club on 3rd May 2019 with over 100 golfers playing to support Grandad and the MND Association, raising another £4,500. Also, on Friday 31st May 2019, Frankie sang in a Charity Concert for the MND Association. She sang Grandad’s favourite songs, alongside The Gruffs Male Voice Choir. The evening was very emotional and huge success, raising £1,200.

Frankie also sang alongside a local band at the Last Resort Club in Worthing in July, raising a further £1,600.

Team ALBON ran in the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 23rd February 2020 to raise funds and awareness for the MND Association. The team consisted of myself, Chris and family friends. We ran in probably the worst weather in its history with 50mph winds and driving rain! £4,000 was the total amount raised.

Frankie sang in another Charity Concert at St Mary's Church for Grandad on Saturday 2nd April 2022. Grandad originally arranged the concert 2 years ago but unfortunately is now no longer here to watch his favourite singer sing. Frankie sang Grandad's favourite songs, alongside Vocal Fusion Acapella and Bourne Chorus. The evening was a huge sucess and we raised £1,200.
