On Sunday 12 June 2005, Ed and Kat will be competing in the 2005 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco and are hoping, by doing so, to raise money for Adfam National.
Adfam is a great charity whose focus is to help families affected by drugs and alcohol by providing support, counselling and a range of specialised services.
The triathlon starts with a treacherous 1.5 mile swim from the infamous Alcatraz Island to the shores of San Francisco through strong currents and icy 9-10 degree waters. Apparently sharks do not stray into the Bay Area, although former inmates of Alcatraz were told otherwise!
Provided we manage to complete the swim, we then have to run 1 mile to our bikes (a 'warm up'...) and cycle 18 miles around the very hilly streets and avenues of San Francisco.
The race concludes with an 8 mile run to the finish line through the deep sand of Baker Beach including a climb up the "dreaded Sand Ladder" (400 steps cut into the cliff - the equivalent of 20 floors of our office, but through sand). According to the race organisers, "this experience will drain the legs of even the best professionals ... there is nothing like it anywhere in the sport of triathlon".
This year 1500 people will be competing, mostly from the USA with 40 or so from England. You can find out more by logging on to www.tricalifornia.com/alcatraz/2005/index.htm
All donations are secure and will be sent electronically to Adfam National. If you would prefer not to give online, please email us with details of your home address in order to qualify for gift aid. We are paying for the trip ourselves, so all donations will go directly to Adfam.
If you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving will add an automatic 28% bonus to your donation at no cost to you. Please join us in supporting Adfam National: a fabulous cause!
Thanks a lot!
