Story
Emma Egerton, the daughter of my good friend, Chief Inspector John Egerton, was just 18 when a fatal allergy to peanut oil she had since childhood, tragically took her life.
This year family, friends and colleagues have rallied around to raise funds for a cause which was close to her heart.
Emma had recently suffered from bulimia and it was this disorder, together with the nut allergy which were the factors in her tragic death. On the night she died, Emma had a Bulimic episode and unknowingly consumed takeaway food which had been cooked in peanut oil, probably because bulimia had lowered her guard.
She had a little taste of the takeaway and realised it contained peanut oil. She called the ambulance and left her front door open because she knew she only had a few minutes. The paramedics arrived and found the door open, but they were unable to revive Emma.
On the 27th March, I will be running the Wilmslow Half Marathon in aid of Beat - a charity which assists in improving awareness about eating disorders and helping an estimated 110,000 people with the condition which has the highest mortality rate of any psychological condition.
Emma herself will also play a key role in supporting the work of the charity. Her legacy is the dozens of paintings and drawings created during her time at Xaverian College in Rusholme. Many of those art works depict how new life and hope can sprout from unlikely places and circumstances. People will soon have the opportunity to buy prints of her pictures to support the charity’s work.
A really fitting tribute to Emma is to support those people who suffer from eating disorders and to ensure Beat provides someone to talk to and someone to listen to.
