Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm running the Cardiff Half Marathon for The Dystonia Society, a charity important to me as I'm currently researching the underlying causes of Dystonia as part of my PhD.
Dystonia is an incurable condition which occurs when incorrect signals from the brain lead to uncontrollable and very painful muscle spasms. It is one of the most common movement disorders, estimated to affect at least 70,000 people in the U.K. alone. Dystonia is associated with significant lifetime disability, which has an impact on education and employment. There are currently no universally effective treatments for dystonia, necessitating an improved understanding of the underlying disease-causing mechanisms in order to allow development of novel and potentially disease-modifying therapies. The effects of Dystonia are not simply confined to impacting on someone's physical movements but also have a devastating effect on quality of life and mental health.
Any donations big or small would be a huge motivation for me on race day and can make a huge difference to those living with Dystonia.
