In the 40 years since Meningitis Now was founded, we have funded research, provided support & worked to raise the public's awareness of the disease. Our vision is a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis & everyone affected gets the support they need to rebuild their lives.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 30th August 2013, I will be embarking on a six day trek, climbing the Andes mountains in Peru, with other volunteers from the University of Nottingham, in order to raise vital funds for the Meningitis Trust. To finish the trek we will be climbing Machu Picchu, which is 2430 metres (7970 feet) above sea level. This will involve hiking on tough terrain, cutting through forests, climbing snow capped mountains and crossing rope bridges. In the day temperatures are likely to reach an average of twenty degrees whilst climbing, however at night, temperatures are likely to go below zero.

The Meningitis Trust helps families and individuals to deal with the impact of meningitis giving advice, home visits, offering financial support to families and much more. All their services are free of charge therefore donations are vital.

There are various forms of meningitis, which are potentially life threatening. Viral meningitis mostly affects children and toddlers, although it is not usually life threatening it can leave severe effects. Bacterial meningitis on the other hand is life threatening, with around 2,500 cases being reported in the UK each year and one in ten people who contract bacterial meningitis will die. Many others will be left with after effects such as loss of hearing, loss of sight, brain injury and learning difficulties.

£10 can pay for 333 symptom cards to help people recognise the signs of meningitis. With bacterial meningitis requiring urgent attention, this £10 could be life-saving.

£17 can help give the family of someone left disabled by meningitis a much needed rest.

£25 pays for enough craft materials for five sessions of art therapy to help children affected by meningitis.

Donations go a long way, whether they are large or small, they will help me reach my target of £2,950.00.

Thank you so much for all the support. I really appreciate any donations as I feel that the Meningitis Trust is such a worthwhile cause.
