On July 10 2014, 9 of us are embarking on the 3 Peaks Challenge in a fund-raising effort for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Please take the time to read this poster to find out a little bit more about what it’s all about.
The Challenge
The 3 Peaks Challenge is a 24 hour expedition in which we will climb the 3 highest peaks in the UK; Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon. The challenge will see us climb 3000 vertical metres over a 27 mile walk, starting and ending our climb in darkness. Its not only a test of our physical fitness, endurance and stamina, but also our mental determination. If this isn't enough of a reason to sponsor us, then please read on to discover why we are embarking on the challenge.
Robert Stella
On January 5 2014, we sadly lost one of our closest friends to pancreatic cancer. Rob was only 26 when he passed away, and had only been diagnosed with the disease in July 2013. He was never given a fighting chance to beat the disease as the doctors didn't discover the cancer until he was suffering from the final stages of the illness. Rob received many misdiagnoses before the cancer was found, and this is partly because of the lack of research and funding that pancreatic cancer receives.
Pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates out of any of the cancers, with only 3% of sufferers living 5 years or more. This horrible statistic is worsened when you consider only 1.6% of all national cancer research funding is dedicated to pancreatic cancer research. We all feel that this is a fact that needs to change, and therefore we are climbing to raise money to ensure that others, unlike Rob, are given a fighting chance against pancreatic cancer.
