We exist to help refugees and asylum seekers settle and rebuild their lives in the UK, empowering them to thrive.

Story

A refugee is someone who has fled their own country in fear of their safety. In the majority of cases, fleeing is the only option.

By the end of 2017 there were 6.3 million Syrian refugees worldwide. Around 4.4 million of these refugees are currently being hosted by just two countries – Turkey and Lebanon. The UK has pledged to resettle 20,000 Syrians by 2020 through the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme. By the end of 2017, 10,538 Syrian refugees had come to the UK through this scheme.

We believe that the UK's pledge to only help resettle 0.3% of Syrian refugees is not enough and we fully support the resettlement of refugees in the UK.

Upbeat Communities is a very small charity lead by passionate volunteers, that welcomes refugees into their new homes in Derbyshire. So far, Upbeat Communities have helped 90 Syrian refugees settle in and around the city! They aim to welcome and empower refugees and raise awareness in local communities. Some of their work includes providing free English classes, helping refugees find work, offering temporary accommodation, and educating local communities.
