Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Almost exactly five years ago my beautiful daughter Megan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

Although this was a shock I quickly realised that I had absolutely no genuine understanding of this condition. More importantly was the huge impact that this disease has on not only the individual, but on so many others around them; it is no exaggeration to say that it is life changing.

Not to be confused with Type 2 Diabetes, there is still no known cause or reason people contract this disease. It’s not health, diet or weight related; it is simply a case that your pancreas stops the production of insulin, which is essential to every day life. Meg had been entirely healthy until this point.

Fortunately and amazingly, this is a disease that can be managed with careful monitoring but I had no appreciation of the intensity of what this actually meant for a young child growing up. Every single meal or snack they have requires careful adjustment of insulin levels and
carb counting. Simple things taken for granted like going to school, school trips, sleep overs and even time on their own is never the same again, with heightened worry and anxiety over looking
after blood sugar levels in your absence.

All of this is hard enough for adults but for young children growing up,it can be very hard on them learning to cope with “being different” , and having to take so much responsibility for the seriousness of their health everyday and night.

Tragically it is a fact that every year too many young lives are lost to this
disease which seems incomprehensible but true.

JDRF UK focus entirely on children and young people with this condition. The support they provide to both the children and their families is invaluable, but as with most minor charities every penny counts. Huge steps have been made in managing Type 1 but as yet there is no cure or known prevention.

I’m extremely conscious that there are so many worthwhile charities competing for people's generous donations but anything you feel you can give will certainly make a difference.

Thank
you

Alex
