Story
Earlier this spring I made the rather foolish decision (having just had a baby) to run the London Marathon in early October. I’m not a natural runner but thought this would be an opportunity to achieve a huge milestone and raise money for a charity I care about deeply. Training with very broken sleep (thanks George!) has been a real challenge and meant a lot of sacrifice from Kat - so dig deep friends! ;)
I am proud to be running for ‘Hospices of Hope,’ which was was founded 30 years ago by my uncle after he made a trip to Romania following the fall of communism. During his visit he saw the awful standards of state run hospitals with many dying in agony, and sought to build a system of palliative care to provde peace and dignity to the terminally ill and their families.
I have been able to experience this first hand having volunteered over a couple of summers as a teenager and then with Kat more recently. This was to support holiday camps for terminally ill children and their families, giving an opportunity for family members to be able to enjoy the final years of their loved ones, amidst a backdrop of pain and tragedy.
The charity has seen enormous demand across Eastern Europe and continues to expand into new countries which do not have adequate state run facilities. My hope is that my (admittedly ambitious!) target of £3,000 will go just a little towards providing the healthcare that so many less fortunate than us do not currently have access to.
