Wimbledon Common Half Marathon · 2 May 2021

We’re Mind, the mental health charity, working across England & Wales. We believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Those of you who know me/played with me would know I’ve always have said I hate running and refused to run at some clubs in preseason!!!

However once the football season was postponed because of lockdown, we’ve ended up in a place we’d never been in before. Nothing to aim for, not competing, not being part of a team and seeing your team mates 3 times a week.

At the end of February me and Charlie set a goal to complete a half marathon in April and committed to it. We were training together every Tuesday and Thursday evening to try and keep our same routine as those were the nights we’d normally train, and a Sunday.

I didn’t realise how much our weekly runs helped my mental health and kept me in a good place physically too. I was looking forward to finishing work and running to try and get a new PB.

Then finally yesterday was race day after it was postponed from April, which slowed down our training the last 4 weeks, so I wasn’t 100% sure if I could complete the Half Marathon but wanted to give it a go anyway!

Surprised myself in the end and managed to complete the Wimbledon half marathon 13.1 miles (21.1km) without stopping, furthest I'd run in training was 15km, mid March.

This was definitely the most physically and mentally challenging thing I’ve ever done in my life, but managed to stay focussed and positive during the run.

We didn’t announce we were running for charity as I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to complete but now I will be sharing a link to MIND charity.

Finally, I will say with a sore foot and knee, setting goals (however small) in life or giving yourself something to aim for,  it will give you purpose and a massive sense of achievement upon completing.

If I can run a half marathon in 2 hours without stopping then you can do anything you put your mind to.

Maybe a full marathon one day but time for both of us to have a break from running now and focus on preseason, starting end of June and hopefully no more interruptions to next season!

All your donations however much are massively appreciated by both of us!
