I'm Running The London Landmark Half Marathon for Refugee Action

London Landmarks Half Marathon 2021 · 1 August 2021 ·
Did you know that about 1% of humanity is displaced? Within the past decade, the number of refugees in the world has nearly doubled. About 79 million people today have been forced away from their homes. Despite this great need, nearly 95% of refugee resettlement needs are unmet. (UNHCR)
In February 2021, a few of my friends and I decided we wanted to run in a half marathon. When I first started consistently running in April 2020, I could barely run a mile without wanting to give up. At this point of my training, I can run a 10K!
As I finish university this year, I have been reflecting on all that I've learned both in and outside the classroom (or, Zoom room). Growing up in New York, I have witnessed secondhand a small amount of the hardships that immigrants and especially refugees face when moving to a different country. Through my local community, I have seen how even small amounts of assistance can make a big difference to make refugee families feel safe and at home in their new country.
I've also been reading a lot about this issue in my college class at King's College London called "Topics in Philosophy: Ethics of Migration," which was taught by the wonderful Dr. Sarah Fine. In this class, I've read, watched, and taken to heart a plethora of resources about the difficulties and processes faced by refugees fleeing conflict.
Refugee Action is a UK-based charity that helps refugees who've survived some of the world's worst regimes. They get them the basic support they need to live again with dignity and help them build safe, happy, and productive lives in the UK.
I would be so grateful if you'll support me in this fun fitness journey and simultaneously give to a great cause. You can also watch my running progress on Instagram @agkytka or on my Facebook page.
