Story
On May 17th 2009, I joined 214 other runners on the edge of the Fish River Canyon in Namibia to undertake a 6 day 150 mile multi-stage run. Competitors not only got to experience the delights of running in the Fish River Canyon and amongst the highest sand dunes in the world but we also get to do it while carrying all our kit for the entire week including all our food. I finished 57th out of 214 starters and only 168 finishers. Other than losing a few much loved toenails I managed to get round in pretty good shape. Though the 100kilometre day was absolutely brutal and not something to be repeated regularly!
So why did I do this? I figured turning 30 last summer it was time to sign myself up for a new challenge and this seemed to tick all the boxes. I also wanted to do something to raise money for Help for Heroes who are undertaking great work to ensure that all our service men and women who suffer serious injuries while serving their country are given the best care and attention to help their rehabilitation on their return.
H4H are also ensuring that they collaborate with the other Armed Forces charities (including SAAFA and Combat Stress) to work together so that funds donated go where they are needed most and one charity does not benefit to the detriment of others. So please give as generously as you can as these men and women deserve our support having given so much for our country.
I will dedicate my run to my four Grandparents who all served in WW2 and in particular my maternal Grandfather who would have loved this challenge and the H4H charity.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Help for Heroes gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me now!
Thank you
Alex
