Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In October, I am going on a charitable volunteering project to Costa Rica and Nicaragua with Raleigh International as part of my gap year.  I will be spending 10 weeks there and will be doing community and environmental projects.  I think this is a very good cause and I am really looking forward to the challenge.  Further details can be found on the following link: http://www.raleighinternational.org/countries/costa-rica-nicaragua

The project, without flights, costs £2,995. I am going to fund the trip with savings, work during my gap year and, I hope, through sponsorship. Raleigh encourage its volunteers to do fundraising to help with the cost of the trip and to help spread awareness of Raleigh and the good work it does.

I have decided to set myself three separate challenges to try to help to raise funds for the trip - and to help get me fit for the trip itself in a do-it-yourself “Great Coxwell triathlon”. I have decided to:

Swim for 1 km;

Run for 10 km; and

Cycle for 100 km;

Since deciding this,  I realised that:
a) I hadn't been running since the end of the Rugby season in December
b) I hadn't swum for 2 years and
c) I hadn't been on a bike for a year.

Just to make it worse, I remembered that compared to the Olympic triathlon, I was going to be swimming slightly less, running the same distance but doing two and a half times the distance on the bike.

Despite all that, I am pleased (and relieved) to say I have managed to complete my Great Coxwell Triathlon.

The 100 km cycle ride took about 5 hours - with great pain to my bottom by 20 miles, my back by 30 miles and everything else after that!

The 1 km swim took about 35 minutes; it didn't hurt very much and was almost therapeutic after the cycling.  The 10 km run took a bit under 70 minutes and finished me off completely.

I will be going on a Raleigh International Challenge Workshop shortly to find out more about what I will be doing in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and meeting the other people who will be going on the same trip.  I am also brushing up on my Spanish which will also help.  All forms have been completed, flights booked and injections carried out.

I believe I can make a real contribution when I am out there and can't wait for the challenge that it brings.  Thank you for helping me get there.
