West Pennine Way Solo and Unsupported FKT

This has been on my list since 2018 and as far as myself and the creators know it's not been done before. So thanks COVID removing all options for travel, in October I set off to complete a first and fastest known time of the route.

2020 Winter Previous Story...

Solo to Arctic Sweden!

On March 5th 2020 I'm challenging myself to go out on my own in the Arctic. I'll be following the Kungsleden trail in the far north of Swedish lapland for 7 days on my first solo cold weather adventure. As with Lake Baikal below I'll be pulling all of the equipment and supplies required to survive the trip on a 50kg sledge (pulk), making slow but steady progress on skis with special climbing skins that allow the skis to go uphill.

In our everyday lives with work pressures, family commitments, and social expectations, it’s too easy to fall into a mental health downward spiral. I know because I have exeperienced mental health issues in the past, and candidly, I still struggle sometimes. Mind - The Mental Health Charity exist to support people in exactly those situations on an every day basis. Please support Mind who are a fantastic charity doing just as important work as other more obvious charities.

2019 Winter Previous Story...

The challenge is to trek 6 days across the frozen lake for Mind - The Mental Health Charity because people need the support they provide every day

Our team of 3 travel to Lake Baikal on March 2nd and plan to spend 6 days walking, skiing, and snowshoeing across the frozen surface of the lake. Everything we need to survive we will be pulling behind us on sledges by human power alone, with no outside assistance or support.

The remote location and extreme temperatures mean that this will be a test of both physical and mental strength, with temperatures going down to -30 degrees, notoriously strong winds, and unpredictable surface conditions

Whilst being prepared physically by training hard in the preceding months it’s often mental deterioration that causes physical attrition during trips of this nature. You can get lost in your own head, forget to eat/drink enough, don’t realise you are sweating like crazy etc, or go off in the wrong direction. This then leads to hypothermia, extreme dehydration, being separated from the rest of the team... Things can go bad really quickly. To avoid all of this the team needs to communicate and support each member to ensure safe passage through this environment.
