Story

 27/09/2013

Again, huge thank yous to everyone who contributed to our run both in emotional support and monetary terms :)

We all made it over the finish line, in varying times and states!! A common feature was that we all wore smiles on our faces coming through the finish. It was a fantastic weekend and a great way to get together and celebrate such a special young man.

Thank you and see you next year!

A massive thank you to everyone who has been so generous in their donations and for the beautiful words that you have left for Alex and his family. Your kind messages have provided Alex and his family with a huge sense of pride in highlighting Alexs selfless nature, and comfort, when it has been needed most.

Alex didn't fear dying but he was worried that he might be forgotten. With this, we hope to build a legacy in his honour and to ensure that the compassion of a wonderful young man man will live on. It is amazing to think how many people will benefit from the sponsorship already raised, thank you.

Alex passed away on Sunday (7th April). He was at home with his parents, wife and brother, surrounded by love. As to his wishes, and as a homage to his love of surfing, nature and the sea, he will be buried at sea on Tuesday (16th April) in his hometown. There will be a service to celebrate his life and the courage and optimism that shone through him to the very end xxx

A message from Laura:

So today is my birthday......but at the same time Alex Sargeant one of York University's bravest young graduates (a class surfer, beach lifeguard and one of my best friends) is losing a battle with bone cancer.

For those of you who don't know him ....He is one of the most happy go lucky amazing guys, who a year after being diagnosed with a painful cancer in his hip bone, went on to run the 13mile Great North Run and raise over £600 pounds for charity.

I went to see him this weekend with Susie. He was in a lot of pain but still as positive and bright as ever. The specialists have told him that he can't have any more chemo and he doesn't have long left ...They say at best he has a few weeks.

Alex is realistic about dying but talked about really wanting to do something worthwhile and raise money for a humanitarian cause.

He said that doing the Great North Run was one of the best moments in his life. He wished he could run it again but the cancer has spread and now he has to battle just to walk upstairs.

Susie and me agreed we would run in his place this year. The plan is for us to run in his honour and raise as much money as we can for the British Red Cross.

So today is my Birthday....but instead of wishing me Happy Birthday please please can you donate as much as you can ...a little or a lot..it doesn't matter...

With your donation please write some words of encouragement to honour Alex's life while he is still with us.

It doesn't matter if you don't know him, honour his dedication, his compassion and his fighting spirit.

If nothing else, admire the ability of a young newlywed man to see past his own very real battle against pain and suffering and be unselfish to the very last.

Let him know that he won't be forgotten.
