Story
I've known about WCTT and its work with disadvantaged young people in Merton, South London for over five years. Their arts-based educational projects are all about the issues that most affect them- such as online safety, mental health problems and relationship abuse.
They work with up to 4000 young people each year, some of whom have a disability, have Special Educational needs or are on the very edge of custody, building their confidence, teaching them new skills and offering them new opportunities.
"I've never achieved anything educationally in my life, so this is a first for me. The things that used to be in my path, now I just step over them." SAM, 17
WCTT also runs a Young Actors Company which is open to all young people in Merton aged 11-19. They meet every week, stage nine performances every year and are always over-subscribed. It's also FREE to attend- which means anybody can join, whatever their background or circumstances.
"There's no drama in school any more and I love acting so I'd be lost without the YAC." ISLEY, 15
"It's important that its free because some of us wouldn't be able to come if it cost us money." JADA, 16
"Well done to all of you. You are making an enormous difference in a young persons life." PARENT OF MEMBER WITH AUTISM & DYSLEXIA
"I was one of those people who was always in the wrong place at the wrong time but YAC is a home where everyone is different, where you can come and be a new person..." NIKHIL, 18
WCTT is a small local charity and is often overlooked by grant-givers. They receive no local or central government funding which is why I want to help them...
