Thank you for taking your valuable time to visit my JustGiving page for Transaid Cycle Zambia Challenge. .My name is Alfred Chipembele. I have joined colleagues on a campaign mission to create road safety sensitisation in an effort to reduce road traffic accidents in Zambia and Africa in general.. In March 2008 my own elder brother who was a professional driver and was just two years away from his retirement, lost his life together with his friend after being hit and crushed by a minibus driver at a zebra crossing in Lusaka. Just recently in November 2017 my wife’s elder brother Emilio Katuta was also hit and killed by another minibus driver in Kasama. Many of these horrific accidents can be prevented if driver training and government road safety policy makers put more emphasis on the importance of road safety and driving standards. Consequences of road traffic accidents can not be over emphasised. These are usually fatal, catastrophic and leave permanent physical , emotional and psychological trauma on victims and their families. Road traffic accidents also potentially negate a developing nation like Zambia of it’s efforts to social and economic development.
It is for these reasons and indeed in memory of all those loved ones who have been untimely taken away from us and all those victims and families whose lives have been permanently shuttered as a result of recklessness by some drivers and defective vehicles which should not be allowed on our roads that I have decided to be part of 'Cycle Zambia challenge 2018'. I will cycle 490kilometres from Lusaka the capital of Zambia to the Victoria Falls in Livingstone on the boarder with Zimbabwe to raise funds for (Transaid)Transport Aid.
Transaid is a UK based international charity which supports drivers, governments and driver training institutions to promote and improve road safety as well as provide basic valuable life saving health care logistics in hard to reach areas in Sub Sahara Africa..
In Zambia Transaid has partnered with The Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Lusaka-to build capacity to deliver professional HGV, FLT, Motorbike and PSV driver training to internationally recognized standards. The charity has also donated HGV trucks and industrial equipment to ITC for training purposes.
If you care about preventing road traffic fatalities and permanent physical disabilities suffered by victims of road traffic accidents caused by dangerous drivers and defected vehicles , this is your opportunity to exercise your civic responsibility by sponsoring me to do this Cycle Zambia great challenge aimed at sensitising motorists, government road traffic policy makers and other road users about the importance of road safety in Zambia and other Sub Sahara African countries. I suppose it is time if not long overdue not to just talk about it but do something to ensure that government and driver training intuitions step up their commitment to reinforce road safety legislation as well as to effectively prosecute dangerous drivers and vehicle owners/companies who break the law. It is reassuring that the government of Zambia has already taken a step towards preventing road traffic accidents by banning public transport services operations at night. We need to do more to bring sanity on our roads.
Rest assured every penny you give will go a long way to make our roads safer. For your peace of mind donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
