Alice and Alex are walking again, this time to raise money for Cancer Research UK

Thanks for visiting our JustGiving page.
This September, we are taking part in the Shine Night Walk to support Cancer Research UK.
We are raising money for research into both bowel cancer and brain tumours. We were in our favourite local, the Somers Town Coffee House recently and we decided that we wanted to do something to recognise two people very close to us whom have suffered from these terrible diseases. Given that we made a great walking team back in 2011(see pics!) we thought that the Shine Walk would get us fit again and raise money for a very important cause at the same time.
Alice’s friend Paul was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in 2006. At first he was only given 3 months to live but thankfully proved that prognosis wrong. He received repeated treatments each of which, whilst taking a massive toll on him, gave him the opportunity to spend more time with his friends and family, run the marathon for cancer care and be a volunteer teacher in South America. We all hoped that a miracle cure or a succession of new treatments would get him to the point where he could make plans for his future, but the treatments were unable to keep up and he sadly passed away this month. Our fundraising may seem a drop in the ocean compared to the money that will be needed to fully understand how to operate on or treat cancer within the human brain but we’ve really only just started understanding the brain and we’ll only get there one research project at a time.
Alex's mum has advanced bowel cancer. She is going to have to struggle with the horrendous side effects of chemo on and off for the rest of her life as there are no other available treatments. Hopefully research into cancer and possible new treatments will one day find a way to prolong life, or even cure cancer without the horrible consequences of chemotherapy, which can be as bad, if not worse, than the effects of the cancer itself. It may not come soon enough for my mum, but hopefully we can help other people in the future so they don't have to go through what she has had to.
Thousands of people have benefited from Cancer Research UK’s work. Please dig deep and sponsor us. Every pound you donate will help fund their life-saving work.
