Story

When your world as you knew it is completely turned upside down and inside out, when your child is seriously unwell, when you are faced with situations that no parent should witness their child experiencing, when you are hanging on by a thread of hope, when people don’t know what to say to you.  It’s a world no one imagines, no one wishes to be part of.  A world where you can’t fix it, a world where you feel completely isolated, alone, and desperate.  A world that impacts your entire family.  A world that can be so incredibly dark and lonely and takes you to depths of thoughts, feelings and emotions you never knew existed – and then you discover Parenting Mental Health! A safe space for parents/carers to share their lived experience, to be heard, to be supported, where people speak the same universal language. Where understanding, care, compassion and empathy is endless.  Where huge connections are made with people you may have never met in real life.  A space that doesn’t try to fix, judge or criticise, but shines a light in your tunnel, or on your path.  A space that empowers you, guides you, a place where lived experience means more than anything.  From something so dark came something so beautiful.  Parenting Mental Health is a valuable lifeline for so many people all across the world, from all walks of life.

It’s taking a lot for me to be able to do the LLHM – pushing through personal and logistical obstacles, as well as the limitations you have when you are a carer.  I am unable to run it due to my ankle (and not being a runner) but just to be able to walk it is something that would have been completely unthinkable and unachievable two years ago, due to how impacted our lives were by extreme poor mental health.  This is a huge personal challenge for me, it is very anxiety provoking, and even asking for donations is a struggle.  But, I have seen the benefit of the Parenting Mental Health (Facebook group) and the value of it.  I now also volunteer for them and the money raised will help continue to support members in so many ways, so please donate whatever you can.  Thank you so much, Alison x

Parenting Mental Health began with a Facebook group in September 2016, by Suzanne Alderson after her daughter was suicidal at the age of 14. Once Suzanne's daughter was on the road to recovery, her mission was with a goal to connect and support parents. Since then it has grown to support parents around the world across its digital channels and programs. Parenting Mental Health now empowers, educates, and supports tens of thousands of parents to successfully navigate each stage of their child's mental illness, and to become stronger and more resilient families. Parenting Mental Health became a Charity in February 2020. The aim to fundraise and provide financial support for PMH to be able to deliver training, resources, interventions, counsellors and education to parents for FREE.That is why we need your support. Your donation will allow PMH to continue to provide services which bring hope and connection to parents and carers supporting their child throughout poor mental health.

About the charity

When 2/3 children with a diagnosable mental health issue don't get treatment from the NHS, they turn to parents - yet everything you knew about parenting is changed. PMH aim to skill and support 1 million parents through this experience by 2026, with vital resources, guides and connection.
