Step Up Challenge 2023 · 1 May 2023 to 31 May 2023 ·
It's been a while since I did a crazy challenge (3 years to be exact - remember the lockdown marathon down my road?)
Beating antibiotic resistance can feel like a mountain to climb, so throughout May I will be stepping up, along with The Huldufolk (Icelandic Elves) to climb Eyjafallajokull and make a difference and save modern medicine.
Pronounced Eya-fiatla-yourguk, it's that pesky Icelandic volcano which blacked out the sun and grounded planes in April 2010!
OK so we (me and the Elves) are climbing it virtually during May. I'm not daft - it could explode in real life!
It's 1651 meters high which is 10,707 stairs and 824 flights (13 steps per flight).
I HATE stairs!
The Story - I remember the Icelandic ash cloud - April 14th 2010. I was in isolation in hospital having undergone high dose chemo to treat a rare blood cancer. The next day I was due to get an infusion of stem cells to kick start my new immune system. I was at a very high risk of infection and needed antibiotics to help me. As well as the ash cloud, the TV was full of general election (would we get a new Tory government) and preparation for the London 2012 Olympics. At that point I wasn't even sure whether I'd outlive the expiry date on my debit card. So this apocalyptic volcanic event seemed to mirror the blackness that I was shrouded in at the time.
Infection is the second largest killer of people with cancer. I was incredibly lucky. But antibiotic resistance is a growing problem, killing 1.27million people globally each year. And it's getting worse!
I know these are tough times for people and that there isn't a lot of spare cash to go around. But if you do sponsor me - I will give you a massive Eurovision 'Ja Ja Ding Dong' thank you!
All donations will go to support Antibiotic Research UK and their mission to tackle drug-resistant infections through research into new treatments, public engagement and patient support.
Thank you!
