As you all know the last four years of my life have been spent fighting to stay alive. I didn't have cancer but a rare and complicated problem with my immunity. I was forced to seek medical treatment abroad and had to fund it 100% myself. This has given me a heightened awareness of what research, treatment and tests cost. Something I thought as a pathologist I had some understanding of but, boy was I wrong!

I have chosen to do the Edinburgh Moonwalk for a number of reasons mainly to raise funds to fight breast cancer a disease that is indiscriminate but with the right treatment and early detection treatable and most importantly survivable! And also to set myself my first 'being healthy' goal with the added bonus of being able to walk with my incredible husband Shaun. It seems fitting to me that my first soirée out into being healthy is with the person who in many ways is responsible for me being ‘here’ and able to now once again live a full life.

With every step I take I will think of those not as fortunate as me to have the means and support I had to get me healthy!

I will remember the time I spent in a wheelchair and the fact that I will never ever even for one second take walking for granted again!

I will focus on those who are yet to be diagnosed or treated. Whose lives will be saved and families kept whole with the money we will raise!

Whether your life or that of a loved one has been affected by cancer or any other debilitating disease I urge you to please donate….anything you can. You will be surprised how it all adds up and how far institutions can make those pounds and pennies stretch!
