As many of you know, communities across India have been devastated by the recent spike in Covid-19 cases, with thousands of people dying every day.

One of India’s most invisible and vulnerable communities are waste pickers who create tradeable value out of waste and are frontline workers combating climate change through their role in the nation's recycling practices. Waste pickers, an already severely marginalized group made up mostly of women, children, and Dalits (the caste of lowest status in India) have been pushed to the brink in the pandemic. Despite having to continue their work through the lockdowns, they have had little to no financial, medical or welfare protection.

My partner, Prerna, and I, Alvaro, want to raise £4200 for Hasiru Dala (https://hasirudala.in), an NGO in India that works with waste pickers and other waste workers.

Here is how you can help:

£5 donation will provide basic food (rice, dal, oil, etc) for one family for a week.

£17 donation will provide basic food for one family for a month.

£50 donation will pay for a quarantine care kit for waste pickers and other slum dwellers in need of support during isolation in a centre run by Hasiru Dala. Kits include masks, soap, sanitary napkins, toothbrushes, and other essentials required for up to one month of quarantine.

£100 donation will provide a complete family Covid-19 care package, including food supplies, accommodation, oxygen, medication, and family support.

In the spirit of putting our money where our mouth is, Prerna and I will top up the funds raised by an additional 10% (up to £420 should we reach our goal). Moreover, I have decided to put the funds raised through INTO Giving's "iGive campaign" to increase them by a further 20% over the total raised.

As an INTO employee I am entitled to put the fundraising through this INTO Giving campaign which helps boost funds for great causes across the globe. So far, iGive has generated £60,000 of donations (including £10,000 iGive top up) with funds being donated to over 50 charities worldwide.
