Alloa Half-Marathon · 16 March 2014

Northern English Springer Spaniel Rescue (NESSR) is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of unwanted and abandoned spaniels across the UK. We are run entirely by volunteers who foster the dogs in their own homes often traveling miles to pick up dogs from pounds across the UK.

Sonny's story

When Sonny came to NESSR 10 days before Christmas he had just been rescued from the pound on the day 'his time was up'. It was obvious that he was going to need veterinary attention as he was very underweight, coughing and refusing to eat. At approximately 12 years old this was not a good sign and I offered to foster him.

The vet diagnosed bronchitis and Sonny was immediately put onto a course of antibiotics.  He showed signs of having painful joints but initial urine testing showed possible liver disease so we were limited to what drugs we could give him.

Sonny had to be syringe fed nutrients and wet food which was distressing for him and after 3 days was still refusing to eat and seemed to be deteriorating. The vet ran some blood tests and the results showed our initial worry over his liver were unfounded. We immediately put Sonny on a gentle painkiller.

The next day Sonny ate a morsel of food willingly.  During the day he ate small amounts of cooked chicken and pork sausages.  Over the next few days he ate more and more and gradually regained strength and enthusiasm for life.

Sonny spent his Christmas holidays in a caravan in a woodland park and gradually built up his walks, his appetite and his weight.

After 5 weeks with NESSR Sonny is now a healthy, happy spaniel with a spring in his step.  He is now looking for a 'Forever Retirement Home' to call his own.

When I offered to foster Sonny I told Cynthia (NESSR Boss) to 'Sod the vet bills, I'll sort something'.  And this is what I have come up with.

I am challenging myself to run a half-marathon (13.1 miles) to raise money to help pay Sonny's vet bills.

And this is where you come in. Just a pound will go a long way to helping NESSR help all the dogs in their care.
