Story
In 2023 Home-Start Butser is celebrating their 25th birthday. To mark this remarkable achievement of supporting families I am climbing Kilimanjaro (with a banner) to raise awareness for this amazing local charity.
I am self funding this trip, so ALL the monies raised will go directly to Home-Start Butser to enable more volunteers to be trained, more groups for families to attend and more courses such as first aid and safeguarding for the volunteers.
I have been involved with Home-Start Butser for 7 years. I am a both a volunteer and a trustee. As a volunteer I spend three hours a week offering support to a family. Previously I supported a young single mother with 5 month old twins for 5 1/2 years. Watching the mother get back on track and the boys growing up and flourishing in her care was a very rewarding experience.
Recently with the impact of covid many families have found themselves isolated which has contributed towards mental health issues in some. The support and non-judgemental listening capacity of a Home-Start Butser volunteer is enabling them to keep going.
I have since become a trustee of the charity which enables me to see the workings of a dedicated group of volunteers along with some amazing staff all with the same aim of nurturing and empowering families to move forward.
HomeStart uses carefully selected volunteers who have parenting experience, who visit a family on a regular basis for a couple of hours a week. They offer friendship, practical and emotional support to enable families to get back on track.
