Story

I am running the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon for the Salvation Army in memory of my grandparents, Norman and Elizabeth Wright. They were amazing people who touched the lives of everyone they met. I am 20 years old and a trainee Primary School Teacher. I chose to run for the Salvation Army to support the amazing work they do as well as giving back to the charity which was the foundation of my grandparent’s life. They were proud salvationists, who devoted their life to the army and were constantly giving back and making a difference in everyone’s life, I feel very fortunate to call them my grandparents. I owe some of my best memories with my family to the Salvation Army, as being such a big family, we rarely got to spend time altogether, apart from at Christmas when the Salvation Army used to hold their Family Christmas service. They were so proud of us all and it would light up their faces seeing us all there. My Grandma unfortunately passed away in 2015, although she is no longer with us, my grandad filled that void through love and memories which kept her alive in my heart. The support my grandad received from the Salvation Army after my grandma passed was inspiring.  On the 12th March 2018 I lost my grandad, I count my blessings every day for having them both and want to make them proud. When I was looking at the London Marathon and the range of charities they support I felt inspired but still thought I would never do it. Until, I saw the Salvation Army, I felt overwhelmed and motivated! However, I am not a runner and have never run further than a mile so it will be a huge challenge, one which I will take on with pride. I understand that lots of people are close with their grandparents, but mine were remarkable. They spent a lot of their time at the Army, it was their happy place, therefore by giving back to this amazing charity it is a privilege and an honour. Life is short and sometimes you have to go out and try something new so what better way than raising money and celebrating two wonderful lives!
